Plastic film used to protect and stabilise pallets of bottles during packaging and logistics can also be given a second life.
One year after the start of their collaboration, Italian plastics recycler Aliplast and wine producer Cantina Pizzolato have taken stock of their project to recover the pallet-cover and stretch films used by the Treviso-based winery.
In 2025, Pizzolato sent just under 20 tonnes of plastic film to Aliplast, in addition to 1,801 kg managed through the local service. Overall, 91.7% of the plastic waste generated by the winery was sent for recycling.
The journey is short, but the loop is complete: the materials are sent to Aliplast’s Istrana plant, in the province of Treviso, where they are sorted, washed and converted into recycled granules. The resulting material is then used to produce new film containing 30% recycled plastic.
Against the backdrop of the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the partnership brings together two value chains that normally follow separate paths - wine production and plastics recycling - while also benefiting from the geographical proximity of the two companies.
“The project with Aliplast combines environmental sustainability with efficient resource management, reducing waste, encouraging material recovery and strengthening ties with the local area through cooperation between two companies located just a few kilometres apart,” comments Sabrina Rodelli, Board Member responsible for Sustainability at Cantina Pizzolato. “In other recycling projects, the lack of operating plants in Italy still forces us to send materials across the border. This is why we consider it particularly significant to be able to develop a local and circular value chain.”
