The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has launched World Packaging Day, an international observance dedicated to packaging that will be held annually on 6 September, starting in 2026.
The date marks the anniversary of the WPO’s foundation in Tokyo on 6 September 1968. The initiative aims to highlight packaging’s contribution to product protection, food safety, quality of life and economic development.
Rather than holding a single central event, associations, companies, universities and industry professionals will be able to organise conferences, training activities, plant visits, sustainability projects and awareness campaigns under the common World Packaging Day identity.
The initiative is built around four guiding themes: Packaging for Progress, focusing on health, safety and accessibility; Packaging Against Food Waste, addressing food waste reduction; Packaging and Economic Growth, highlighting packaging’s role in manufacturing and trade; and Packaging and Sustainability, centred on circularity, ecodesign and materials innovation.
