Italy-based compounder Poliplastic is working with Germany’s Evonik on the production of Trogamid R, a transparent polyamide partially obtained from recycled industrial scrap that has recently been introduced to the market.

Poliplastic sources scrap through collaboration agreements with manufacturers of non-prescription sunglass lenses that use Trogamid transparent polyamides. This closed-loop recycling programme is now being extended to all high-end lens and eyewear manufacturers with substantial production volumes.

The material loop was closed with the market launch of Nylo Zero, the first eyewear brand to offer models made from Trogamid R (pictured), developed by Poliplastic itself.

“This collaboration allows us to create beautiful, premium eyewear frames in a complete circular economy. We believe people shouldn’t have to choose between style and sustainability. Trogamid R is a great example of how to recycle a high-quality polyamide into new material that enables a circular plastics economy,” says Giorgio Algisi, General Manager of Poliplastic Srl.

Alongside Trogamid R, Evonik also offers the Trogamid eCO grade for eyewear applications, produced using bio-based feedstocks attributed through a mass-balance approach.
