Packaging giant Amcor, in collaboration with Italian label materials manufacturer Fedrigoni, has developed a flexible packaging solution for wet wipes that is fully recyclable without requiring the separation of its components. The new pack is designed for compatibility with the polyethylene packaging waste stream used across European markets.
The innovative solution combines Amcor’s AmPrima Plus barrier flow wrap, made of polyolefin-based film, with a semi-rigid polyethylene label developed by Fedrigoni. The result is a mono-material structure certified as recyclable by both RecyClass and Cyclos-HTP, in full compliance with the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
AmPrima Plus can also incorporate post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, in line with future regulatory requirements mandating minimum levels of recycled content from 2030 onward.
According to the project partners, the new packaging is also 15% lighter than conventional multi-material packs with rigid labels and boasts a carbon footprint reduction of up to 55%, calculated using Amcor’s LCA Asset tool and certified by The Carbon Trust.
“As a challenging and technical sector, improving the recycle-readiness of home and personal care products will be instrumental to the success of the PPWR regulation,” commented Federico Lanzi, marketing and R&D director at Fedrigoni Self-Adhesive. “We are proud to offer a solution that champions customer-centric design. This collaboration also represents an acceleration in the Fedrigoni Group's innovation processes and is consistent with our ESG strategy to 2030, which aims to have 100% of materials designed for optimal recyclability and end-of-life recovery.”
