Envalior has received a recyclability certificate from cyclos-HTP for its Durethan C38F polyamide 6 copolymer, used in polyethylene multilayer packaging.
The regenerated material recovered from waste is suitable for producing compounds for injection molding or extrusion of new films, enabling film-to-film recycling.
Based on the certificate from cyclos-HTP, Envalior aims to include the copolymers in the new minimum standard for recyclable packaging design under the German Packaging Act, established by the Central Agency Packaging Register (ZSVR).
“We look forward to when the recyclability of film systems based on Durethan C38F in the polyethylene waste stream will finally be formally established,” said Wolfram Littek, technical marketing manager for Envalior's Intermediates business. “This will save our customers from potential charges currently being discussed for packaging that does not meet the minimum standard.”
To evaluate the compliance of multimaterial polyethylene films, the cyclos-HTP institute developed the CHI-C8-PEF-1 test program, which assesses recyclability using original packaging.
“Tests conducted with Durethan C38F,” stated Envalior, “showed that the polyamide content in the packaging, in the quantities normally used, does not significantly deteriorate the properties of the polyethylene recyclate and, in some cases, even slightly improves them.”
Used as a barrier layer to extend the shelf life of packaged products, the Durethan C38F grade consists of caprolactam, isophthalic acid, and isophorone diamine. Its compatibility with the polyethylene waste stream is due to its very low content in the packaging and the presence of a tie layer. This tie layer helps it mix well with polyethylene in both multilayer packaging and recycled material.
