IMCD has agreed to distribute 5-HMF (5-hydroxymethylfurfural), a bio-based monomer, across Europe. Michelin Group is scheduled to begin production in 2027 at its new 3,000-tonne/year plant in Péage-de-Roussillon, in France’s Isère department. (read article).
The agreement will enable Michelin ResiCare to combine the direct management of major industrial customers with IMCD’s European distribution network. IMCD will also provide technical assistance and application development support for polymers, advanced materials and specialty formulations.
Produced from fructose, 5-HMF contains a furan ring as well as aldehyde and alcohol functional groups. It can be used as an intermediate in biopolymer production and as an alternative to fossil-based intermediates. Its main applications include the synthesis of partially bio-based thermosetting resins and the development of alternative formulations to those based on formaldehyde and other fossil-based intermediates.
