As part of its “Accelerate 2025” strategic plan, Japan’s Daicel Corporation has signed an agreement to sell its 15% stake in the Toyo Styrene joint venture to partner Denka.
Toyo Styrene was established in 1998 by Daicel (15%), Denka (50%) and Nippon Steel Chemical & Material (35%) to consolidate their respective polystyrene businesses and preserve the viability of the sector at a time when domestic demand was falling rapidly because of the progressive overseas relocation of users of this polymer.
Japan’s leading polystyrene producer, Toyo Styrene employs 150 people and operates four plants, one of which is dedicated to compounding, with production capacity of 330,000 tonnes/year of polystyrene.
It also operates a chemical recycling plant (pictured) to convert post-consumer polystyrene into styrene monomer, with capacity of 3,650 tonnes/year, developed in collaboration with Agilyx.
