The Luxembourg-based producer of graphene nanotubes OCSiAl has opened a new laboratory dedicated to liquid silicone rubber (LSR) and room-temperature-vulcanizing (RTV) systems and has added a Tuball product line specific to silicones at its manufacturing site in Serbia, which is currently being expanded.
Equipped for formulation, curing, molding and electrical testing, the new lab will enable the development of new compounds—from concept to pilot production—to accelerate the rollout of conductive silicones containing graphene nanotubes.
Potential applications include parts for electric vehicles, wearable sensors and antistatic robotic components.
In the silicone sector, the Luxembourg company explains, graphene nanotubes make it possible to create materials that are permanently conductive while remaining flexible, soft and colorable—a combination of properties long considered incompatible.
In automotive applications, this makes it possible to span the entire conductivity spectrum, from antistatic materials to EMI-shielding grades, while maintaining elasticity and durability even under severe mechanical and thermal stress.
Beyond mobility, robotics could also benefit from the antistatic protection provided by graphene nanotubes, ensuring precision in sensitive components such as silicone finger prostheses compatible with touchscreens, with electrical resistance between 5 and 200 Ω. In the case of wearable and wellness devices, these characteristics could support accurate, real-time monitoring of body parameters.
Founded in Luxembourg 15 years ago, OCSiAl currently produces graphene nanotubes at a plant in Serbia, inaugurated at the end of last year, with a capacity of 60 tons per year, now being expanded.
