In the UK, revenues from the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) declined by 3% in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, totaling £259 million, reflecting a higher share of packaging made with recycled plastic.
Introduced in 2022, the PPT applies only to plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled content. Since April 2025, the levy has been set at £223.69 per tonne of packaging produced or imported.
According to HM Revenue and Customs, the share of packaging subject to the tax dropped from 42% to 38% in the past year. The remaining 62% was exempt due to recycled content (51%), exports (11%) or medical use (less than 1%).
During the same period, UK production of plastic packaging reached 1.7 million tonnes, exceeding imports of 1.4 million tonnes.
