PreZero, part of the Schwarz Group, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art plant in Sollenau, Lower Austria, for sorting light packaging waste such as pots and multilayer cartons.
The facility integrates artificial intelligence for object recognition, enabling the detection of potentially hazardous items like lithium batteries and battery-containing electronics. The aim is to reduce fire risks and improve worker safety.
Waste is identified through self-learning algorithms and 35 next-generation near-infrared sensors.
Covering 44,000 square meters, the plant can automatically process up to 100,000 metric tons of light packaging waste per year. Initially accessible by road, the site will later be connected to the rail network, with dedicated areas for unloading incoming packaging and loading sorted recyclable fractions onto outbound trains.
