Following the partnership signed last year with Honeywell, Borouge has launched a preliminary project, in the form of a proof of concept, to implement artificial intelligence (AI) in operations at the Ruwais petrochemical complex in the United Arab Emirates.
Carried out in a live production environment, the proof of concept marks a key step toward the development of the petrochemical industry’s first AI-driven control room for large-scale, real-time operations.
Early analyses indicate that AI support could deliver efficiency gains of up to 20%, enhance process reliability by reducing downtime by 20%, and cut operating costs by up to 15%, in addition to lowering energy consumption.
The initiative is a core element of Borouge’s AIDT program (AI, digitalization and technology), which aims to generate $575 million in benefits through the deployment of AI- and digital-based initiatives.
Based on the proof of concept conducted together with Honeywell, Borouge has decided to move forward with the project to further assess the potential of autonomous operations and, where appropriate, scale the technology across the entire Ruwais complex.
