Smart Mold will present Aria, a new AI-based assistance system for injection molding, in the coming days at Plast 2026, the triennial plastics trade fair scheduled to take place in Milan.
Smart Mold, a company in which Sirmax Group holds a 50% stake, specializes in optimizing plastics processing operations.
The system, its developers explain, was created to address a common critical issue in injection molding: every change in process conditions, such as a mold change, machine downtime, material variation or the appearance of defects, requires adjustments that are often left to the individual operator’s experience.
Each inefficient adjustment generates scrap, unproductive machine time and unnecessary energy consumption.
Aria software provides decision-making support, helping the operator return the process to its optimal condition through recommendations based on defect analysis.
In practice, using AI algorithms and computer vision, the system assesses part quality, identifies and interprets any defects, and suggests the most effective corrections to the operator to quickly restore the required quality. It can determine whether the process is improving, deteriorating or requires targeted adjustment, turning the experience gained during mold trials and fine-tuning into a shared knowledge base that can also be used over time by less experienced operators.
“The goal is to bring process intelligence directly to the press, making molding more efficient, stable and repeatable,” explains Giovanni Lucchetta, founder and CEO of Smart Mold. “We are proud to have achieved this result, the outcome of years of research and experimentation, and to now be able to offer our customers such a high level of innovation.”
Aria will be presented at Plast 2026 during a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 10 at 11:30 a.m. at the Sirmax Group stand, C102 in hall 9, and broadcast by live streaming. It will also be possible to see the system in operation on a Wittmann IMM at stand B121 in hall 22.
In machine tests, the average number of trials needed to achieve the required quality was reduced from 25 to 3, a decrease of 88%, while rejected parts fell from 128 to 8, a reduction of 94%.
