Italian packaging manufacturer FLO Group and NatureWorks, the U.S.-based producer of polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymer, have jointly developed a new compostable coffee pod for the North American market.
Named Keygea, the capsule is available in both single-layer and multilayer versions—the latter designed without the need for an additional protective wrap.
The pod is BPI and DIN Certco certified for industrial compostability, meaning it can be disposed of along with used coffee grounds in organic waste collection streams.
Functionally, Keygea has been engineered to optimize water flow during extraction, enhancing the flavor of the coffee. According to the Italian company, thanks to an advanced thermoforming process, it is also one of the lightest pods on the market, weighing just 2.6 grams, while still ensuring strength and full compatibility with high-speed filling and sealing lines.

Based in Fontanellato, near Parma (Italy), FLO Group is one of Europe’s leading producers of thermoformed food packaging, with a strong focus on coffee capsules, tableware, industrial containers and vending cups.
The italian company operates five production sites across Europe and owns subsidiaries ISAP Packaging (Italy), F Bender (UK) and FLO Europe (France). Annual revenue stands at approximately €220 million, with a workforce of around 750 employees.
