Bormioli Pharma will supply the biopharmaceutical company Chiesi with pharmaceutical containers made from PET partially derived from captured carbon dioxide.
This PET Carbon Capture, the result of a collaboration between LanzaTech and Plastipak (which produces it), is made with monoethylene glycol (MEG) obtained through a fermentation process fed by CO2 from industrial emissions or the gasification of biomass waste. BioMEG constitutes 30% of the polymer's composition.
The containers will be used to package a medication indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as vasomotor rhinitis. According to Bormioli Pharma, this marks the first time a PET Carbon Capture bottle has been used in the pharmaceutical sector, combining environmental benefits with high safety standards for patients.
The material does not differ in composition, performance, or recyclability from standard PET produced with fossil raw materials, but it has a lower carbon footprint—21.9% less than traditional PET—while maintaining extraction levels comparable to the standard polymer.

"Today, almost half of our sales come from products manufactured with low-impact materials, thanks to the development of one of the widest sustainable packaging offerings available in the pharma industry, EcoPositive, which includes over 3,000 items in glass or plastic."
