The Orlen plant in Wloclawek, operated by Anwil and home to suspension PVC production, has been designated to host Europe’s first small modular reactor (SMR).

The project stems from a 50/50 joint venture between Orlen and Synthos Green Energy and will deploy the BWRX-300 reactor developed by U.S.-based GE Vernova. Construction will be carried out under license by a special-purpose vehicle controlled by Orlen.

“Poland will host the first BWRX-300 small modular reactor in Europe. We are building the energy system of tomorrow,” said Ireneusz Fafara, president of Orlen. “We spent over a year negotiating terms that safeguard our interests, securing for our joint venture with Synthos direct access to U.S. SMR technology that will enable the project’s delivery.”

The BWRX-300 design is central to Orlen’s industrial strategy The Energy of Tomorrow Starts Today. The group plans to commission at least two SMR units by 2035, with a combined capacity of 0.6 GW.
