Avantium celebrated the official opening of the first demonstration plant for the production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from sugars in Delfzijl, Netherlands.
This building block, through a catalytic reaction with bio-based ethylene glycol, can be used to synthesize a new bioplastic similar to PET: polyethylene furanoate (PEF), which the company will market under the Releaf brand.

Her Majesty Queen Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti attended the inauguration of the new complex, along with Avantium's CEO, Tom van Aken, and 300 guests from the Netherlands and abroad.
