Bulgarian recycler Integra Plastics AD, which came under the control of the Borealis group last year, is converting its production from recycled low-density polyethylene (rLDPE) to premium-quality grades of recycled polypropylene (rPP).

The transition involves the implementation of Borealis’ proprietary Borcycle M mechanical recycling (upcycling) technology, which will also result in an increase in production capacity, currently 20,000 tons per year. No details have yet been provided on the new volumes.

The decision was made to meet the growing demand for high-quality rPP in packaging, mobility and appliance applications, supported by Borealis’ compounding operations.

“This upgrade will give our customers reliable access to premium recycled materials. In combination with Borealis’ superior products and compounding expertise, we’re in a unique position to serve our customers in their quest to transition to sustainable solutions,” said Dirk Langhammer, Borealis vice president, circular economy solutions.

According to the company, “It is an important step to help Borealis’ customers stay ahead of future national and international regulations, such as the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) directive.”
