Swedish packaging and insulation solutions producer BEWI has inaugurated a new mechanical recycling facility for expanded polystyrene (EPS) in Norway, the first of its kind in the country.
The plant adds to the group’s existing recycling operations in Sweden, Czechia, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as its minority stake in a recycling facility in Poland.
To facilitate the collection and reuse of recycled material in production, the new unit is located within BEWI’s plant in Fredrikstad, in the south of Norway, where EPS insulation boards are manufactured.
At full capacity, the recycling plant will be able to process up to 3,500 tonnes per year of material from locally collected EPS insulation and packaging. Once recovered through mechanical processes, the material is reused as feedstock for new insulation products, including the GreenLine EPS and Terra XPS ranges.
Last year, BEWI collected more than 38,000 tonnes of EPS across Europe for recycling.
