The Compostable by Design Platform (CbDP), launched in 2023 by a coalition of compostable packaging stakeholders, has released the first edition of its Compostable by Design Guidelines.
Developed to support businesses and regulators, the document provides a science-based framework to understand when and how compostable packaging and products align with circular economy goals and with EU policy instruments such as the SUP Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
The guidelines are the result of a cross-sector collaboration and are designed to support the design, testing and market introduction of compostable solutions that can effectively contribute to bio-waste recycling.
Among its core components is a decision-tree to help designers and companies assess whether compostability is a sustainable end-of-life option in real-world conditions. It pays particular attention to items that are likely to be food-soiled, frequently present in bio-waste streams or used in closed-loop systems.
The guidelines also outline criteria for selecting certified compostable materials, ensuring that all components — including inks and adhesives — comply with relevant standards. Clear guidance is provided on labeling practices, along with real-world examples, to support informed consumer choices and reduce the risk of greenwashing and contamination. A glossary is included for further clarification of technical terminology.
“Compostable packaging and products can play an important role in achieving Europe’s circular economy goals, but meaningful progress depends on collective action,” said Afsaneh Nabifar, chair of CbDP and head of global advocacy and sustainability for biopolymers at BASF. “Our guidelines, born from an unprecedented collaboration across the value chain, provide companies, regulators and innovators with the clarity and confidence needed to design truly effective compostable solutions for a circular Europe.”
