Versalis, Eni’s chemical company, has teamed up with Veritas, the multi-utility company active in the Veneto region, to strengthen Italy’s circular economy. The focus is on mechanically recycling expanded polystyrene (EPS) waste at Versalis’ Porto Marghera plant, a facility launched earlier this year as part of the reconversion of the former petrochemical hub (see video).
The agreement, signed by Versalis CEO Adriano Alfani and Veritas General Manager Andrea Razzini, will see the partners collaborate in evaluating waste flows and secondary raw materials collected by Veritas in order to assess their suitability for Versalis’ recycling processes.
Capable of turning EPS waste into up to 20,000 metric tons of recycled polystyrene (r-GPPS and r-EPS) annually, the Porto Marghera plant marks a step forward in Italy’s recycling infrastructure.
In Fusina, within Porto Marghera’s industrial area, Veritas manages, through its subsidiaries, the waste Ecodistretto—an integrated waste treatment hub where closely located treatment plants work together to reduce energy consumption and cut emissions.
“To achieve effective recycling of urban waste, we need both the active participation of citizens in proper waste separation as well as sorting and recycling facilities capable of turning waste back into raw material,” Razzini said. “This agreement transforms those requirements into concrete actions, with a positive environmental impact on the city of Venice and the metropolitan area.”
