Even vacuum pouches for food can now be designed with end-of-life recyclability in mind—meeting future requirements of the upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
That’s the goal behind a new innovation from Niederwieser Group, Dow, and Kuraray, who have jointly developed a recyclable monomaterial packaging based on polyethylene.
The vacuum pouch features an EVOH oxygen barrier that remains compatible with existing polyolefin recycling streams—offering an alternative to traditional multi-layer flexible packaging.
In this project, each partner contributed their specific expertise: Niederwieser brought its know-how in vacuum pouch manufacturing; Dow supplied a high-performance polyethylene grade with enhanced stiffness and durability; and Kuraray provided the Eval-branded EVOH barrier layer, essential for extending shelf life and preserving food freshness.
The new vacuum packaging solution will be showcased by Niederwieser at IFFA, the triennial trade fair for the meat industry, taking place in Frankfurt from 3 to 8 May 2025.
