A new flexible packaging is emerging from a joint effort between Italian machinery manufacturer Nordmeccanica, biodegradable materials specialist Ecopol, and adhesives company Henkel.
The concept centers on a paper-based laminate combined with PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol), a biodegradable and water-soluble polymer, allowing the packaging to be fully recyclable with paper and cardboard in the cellulose waste stream.
The PVOH film is supplied by Tuscany-based Ecopol, which operates two plants in Italy and one in the United States. Henkel contributed its expertise by formulating adhesives and functional coatings, while Nordmeccanica provided the converting equipment (pictured) used to produce the laminated structure.
The project is still under development, with the first prototypes expected to debut at the upcoming autumn edition of the Giflex conference, the Italian association representing flexible packaging manufacturers.
